DIY Hay Feeder for Goats or Sheep

My new hay feeder is officially a hit. No more wet hay, means happy goats!
I’m really excited about this new hay feeder I built! I’ve used a lot of hay feeders at many of the goat rescues and sanctuary’s that I volunteer at and I really feel this is the best hay feeder for goats and sheep. Most feeders I’ve seen are metal and have openings that are either too small (2″x4″), which can rub goats’ noses raw, or too large (4″x4″ or 6″x6″), where goats can actually get their heads stuck — and that’s dangerous.
My design has a 3-inch opening made from red oak hardwood which is super strong — small enough to prevent heads from getting stuck, but wide enough to keep them from rubbing their noses raw. Safe, simple, and goat-approved. 🐐

Overall dimensions: 60 in. base x 50 in. width x 72 in. high
Feeder dimensions: 48 in. x 24 in.
The 6-foot metal roof — not only to keep the hay dry, but to keep the goats dry too… because you know, if goats get wet, they might melt! LOL
It’s very heavy and sturdy, so it can support itself and resist blowing over. We recently went through a storm with 50–70 mph winds, and it held up just fine.
We recommend securing it with T-posts or sandbags for added stability if you plan to move it around.

My passion is helping goat rescues and animal rescues in North Carolina
Through my business I was introduced to a home builder by the name of Jerry Pounds. He owns and operates an animal rescue in Benson NC called “Old Cowboy Animal Rescue”. July 2020 I decided to visit the animal rescue and donate some of my time. When I got there, I fell in love with the goats and donkeys.
From that day forward through volunteering, awareness, donations and marketing it has been my top priority to help goats and donkeys in any way I can.

My mission has been to make a difference in the lives of people, goats, donkeys, goat rescues, animal rescues and farm animals in need by providing hands-on help and support. Whether it’s helping put up fencing, building a shelter, or providing hay, straw, or feed to animals, it gives me joy and a sense of purpose to be able to help.
